Alan Parkin, 90, beloved husband of Mary Doreen, passed away peacefully on March 23rd, 2020 in Peterborough City Hospital after a short illness.

Alan was born on May 27, 1929, in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, he was the son of the late Ethel and Harold Parkin.

Alan met Mary in 1956 whilst working at the Electricity Board in Scunthorpe. They married in 1964 and moved to the Isle of Mull, where he not only enjoyed working for North of Scotland Hydro Board but also driving buses around the island. After living there for 2 years they moved to Gainsborough where they had two daughters, Fiona Jane & Anne Marie.

In 1980 they relocated to Grantham where he lived until his death. During his time in Grantham, he worked for the East Midlands Electricity Board where he enjoyed flying in helicopters to check the condition of the county power lines. Following his retirement, he became a councillor for the Grantham Barrowby Gate ward of South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) in 1995 and continued to represent the residents of that ward until 2015.

He became mayor of Grantham in 1999 and was appointed Chairman of SKDC in 2001. He was a member of the Development Control Committee of SKDC throughout his tenure as a councillor, rising to become chairman, a role which he loved. His time on the council was one of the highlights of his retirement together with seeing his collection of grandchildren and grand-dogs. He was a lifelong rail enthusiast and also enjoyed traveling to visit his family in London and Detroit, Michigan.

Alan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Doreen, two daughters, Fiona Jane Parkin (Stephen James Phillips) of London & Anne Marie Bodrie (Alan Bodrie) of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, his four grandchildren, Ella Charlotte Phillips, Grace Alexandra Phillips, Thomas James Phillips, Angus Parkin Bodrie and sister, Brenda Parkin.

Funeral service to be conducted at Grantham crematorium on Wednesday 1st April 2020 at 11:30 am, family flowers only please donations are being collected for the work of the British heart foundation and may be given on the day.
